Show 353 probably for two or three miles below, is what you might call readily accessible on foot or on horseback. Q Or by motor or truck. A Not a motor truck, as I explained; there is a road along the east side, which is away back from the river, which might bring you to within five miles of the San Rafael, and you can drive to the San Rafael on the west side, to within about two miles. But it is generally what you would call-- the fact that you can walk over it at night at least without killing yourself, indicates that it is not exactly in a canyon. At one point we saw wild horses, and at another point I saw cattle tracks, indicating that the horses and the cattle probably found their way down to the river from the plateau. Q I suppose you saw no sign of human beings there? A No sign of human beings there. But I do know that, at the mouth of Roaring Canyon there have been people in there, as shown by inscriptions where men have recently made marks on the rocks; and at the junction there is a side canyon where you can climb it. Q Climb out into the surrounding country. A Yes. There are probably other places; probably the geologists who have been over that country to the plateau 2318 |
