Show 214 The Witness: He was going over that stretch inside of a week. By Mr. Blackmar: Q All right; go ahead. A We struck with our small boat with the outboard motor several times at the bar at the mouth of Salt Wash at Mile 3.8. Now, for about 41/ 2 miles, or 66 per cent of the time traversed that morning, the river was bending and the channel followed the outside of the bends. While we were go-ing around those bends, it was generally unnecessary to take soundings to locate the channel. In practically every case where the river went around the bend, there was sufficient chan-nel, in general, so that no soundings were necessary. Wherever the river straightened out in any way between bends, it was the practice to take soundings. Now, in this particular stretch the crossing bars were probably between Miles 4 and 5, and again between Miles 7 and 8. I have shown on plate 17 ( indicating Complainant's Exhib-it No. 10) the approximate course followed by the boats, with dotted black lines. I have shown by a red circle with a dot each time the large motorboat was observed to have been stuck and required some pushing off to get off the bar. By Mr. Farnsworth: Q Where was this? A I have shown by circles each place 2177 |
