Show 216 very decided whirlpool is formed in the river on account of the bend in the river. A survey was made of the bar and the channel conditions at that point; photographs were also made. Now, progressing upstream from that point, very decided sandbars were noticed and crossing bars were discovered at Mile 16.8, Mile 19.5 and Mile 20.9. Between Mile 19 and Mile 20 both boats had considerable difficulty. The larger boat was stuck at least twice. I might say that many times we went on ahead to locate the channel, and I have only put on here ( indicating exhibit) the times that I actually observed that the big boat was stuck. Throughout the course of the river, up as far as Mile 20, the river is winding between rock channels, alternating sidebars, with the crossing bars between the bends, and almost invariably the crossing bars gave trouble with the operation of the boat. By Mr. Blakmar: Q Well, at what points did you have trouble? A Well, I have stated-- I am up to Miles 19 and 20 now. Q Did you state that you had trouble at 18.3 mile, Mile 19.4 and Mile 19.6? A At Mile 18.4 the large boat was stuck; and twice between Miles 19 and 20. By Mr. Farnsworth: Q Including the 19.4, or opposite that? 2197 |
