FOratmuch as Cotton Mather, a Presbyterian-Prielf of Bopon, has lately publil'hed an HijJory of New-EnglanJ, wherein, norwi£hfianding his ma-ny Confeffions to the Judgments of God, and Mifery that hath come upon them, and followed them ( which hath been ever fince they put the Not'• Servants of the Lord, called ~akers, to Death) and the Cloud of Infamy that llill lies upon them for it; yet he fiill endeavours, ro ma:g-nifie their own Church and State, as Renowned Introd.p.t for the degree of Reformation, profe.ffed and attained col.1 ,2. by Evangelical Churcbes,-and the Example of the befl P· 2 ·'· 1 , l ' Reformed Churches, and .AnfwerirJg the CharaEler of Good Men ;-that they have given Great Examples of the Methods and Mea{ures, wherein an Evangelical Reformation i4 to be profecuted-thofe Gre11t Examples which have been occurring among Churches~as they have been a precio~ Odour to God, in Chrijl ; fo be hopes they will be a preciom Odour unto his People-• fpecimen of many Good Things, &c. when they have been fo much the Reverfe to all thal's Great and Good in their PraBices and Perfecucions ; and nor only fo, but alfo vilely Traduces our Friends, and cafis many unworthy Refteaions on them ; as if tho· he would not·altogether Excufe rheir Perfecutors, yet he endeavours to call the Blame on the Innocent Sufferers, calling them, Hereticlr.s, MaJmen, &c. to cover their own Guilr, inltead of f;onfeffing ir, as they ought to do, that they might find |
