Tanagers are very numerous in Upper Amazonia, as in most other parts of tropical America. Mr. Bartlett obtained examples of 29 distinct species-and Mr. Hauxwell specimens of several others, not apparently met with by Mr. Bartlett. Several of these are quite confined to this district (such as Ramphoccelus nigrigularis, Tachyphonus phceniceus, T. rufiventris, and Diucopis speculigera), and of the others only met with elsewhere in other parts of the great Amazonian wood-region. 1.
