The first school house built in South Weber was A one room Doby. with all eight grades to gather, with one teacher. Some mornings the weather was so bad, the children could hardly lIake it to school. some times the wind was blowing so bad that we would have to hold on to A. pole or tree for A rew minutes to keep i t from blowing us over •. It was nothing to A·Ycyote by the aide of the road. There was JI patch of oak brush up on the side of the mountain not far from our home. and every night the cyotes would go around anu arouna the oak brush & howle. You had to always be on the look out for snakes, Mother used to take her churn up on the hill side by our sprini, where we asways got our water, As we never had our water piped to our house for some time. Lots of time when we would go to get the churn there would be snakes raped around the churn. some tilles rattlers. sbe put the chu' up there to keep it cool in hot w.Rther. One day Mother went down the orchard to pick some rasberrys, & as she was picking, she would squat down to pick the lower brancl ~ one time A big Rattler snake crawled out from under her, she got so scared that she draped all hal, & ran hOlle ~ told Father. al he went down & hunted around & found it & killed it. he said it sure was A big one. It was A wonder it had not struck at her. 'H e did'nt think any thing of killing A snake & skining i t i ·: using it's skin for A hat band. We used to have A black dog we used te call hIG. A ratterler bit him on the nos~ & it swelled up therr times biger than it was, we thought sure it would kill him, but he finely got over it. many times we would take the dog down the orchard with us & we would tell him to ( hunt him up) & he would all through the weeds & if there w~s A snake he would grab it & kill it •• And the boys usee to pick the dog up in their arms and show him the cows up on the hill & as soon as he would spy them away he would go, & bring the cows down on th run, rite up tbtth. barn. (we sure had him trained). Father always liked to P1ay jokes, one time at Christmas ~ve, they got us little ones t.) bed early, & Father got all of Mothers kettles out ~ piled them on top of each other, & tied A string to the bottom one & run it under the door into his bed room, the n. morning just befor day light he creaped in to Ada'S & my bed room, & woke us up, & said 1n Boft Toice,( I think he haa been, & that was all it took, we jumped out of bed, so quite & excited, & creaped out & just as we got almost to the door Father pulleee the string, And down come all the kettles such A bang. I dont think we ever hit the floor till we was in bed with our heads cover, up. & our hearts just A " palpa tating." One day we were eating dinner, & we used to alwal78 ha.e A bucket of water~rom the spril standing by the table. to drink. after we got through our dinner Mother said to lie, Irene take that bucket of wate~& I s~id, " I did'nt bring it in" & Mother grabed me & Father could see what she had in lIind 0\: he juped up &: grabed me & my head went down thhe bucket of water., I think the bucket of water went out much faster. Ilan it come in One htaodthbeeenbot~okmiof P1C ng c erries & had been eating A 1 t f th ft • time my brother Geo sitting on a big pastboard bo soon the ~ a em, a er a while we were all Bitting out under~rees resting. & Geo. waB was . there ~ she just through ~~'her arms &c~:~~ ~sG~~;ri~~D~o ~l~y thetb~nd, &: we all started to laugh, & my St~p grand.other was , e o go aughing so hard that he went through the box with his h up In the air, & he could'nt get out & BOY loIy Grand Wother Harbertson, got very' sick h h-d w~s he ever playing the" cherri BAND.
