Some mornings the weather was so bad, the children could hardly make it to school. some times the wind was blowing so bad that we would have to hold on to it pole or tree for A few minutes to keep it from blowing us over •. It was nothing to A·Ycyote by the side of the road. 'r here was J\ patch of oak brush up on the side of the mountain not far from our home, and every night the cyotes would go around anu arouna the oak brush & howle. You had to always be on the look out for snakes, Mother used to take her churn up on the hill side by our spring, where we asways got our water, As we never had our water piped to our house for some time. Lots of time when we would go to get the churn there would be snakes raped around the churn. some times rattlers. she put the chu: up there to keep it cool in hot w.ather. One day Mother went down the orchard to pick some rasberrys, & as she was picking, she would squat down to pick the lower brancl & one time A big Rattler snake crawled out from under her, she got so scared that she draped all hol, & ran home lG told Father, al he went down & hunted around & found it & killed it. he said it sure was A big one. It waa A wonder it had not struck at her. Re did'nt think any thing of killing A snake & skining it ~ using it's skin for A hat band. We used to have A black dog we .used t( call hIG. A ratterler bit him on the nosfE4 & it swelled up therr times biger than it was, we thought sure it would kill him, but he finely got over it. many times we would take the dog down the orchard with us & we would tell him to ( hunt him up) & he would all through the weeds & if there was A snake he would grab it & kill it •• And the boys uaeG to pick the dog up in their arms and show him the cows up on the hill & as soon as he would spy them away he would go, & bring the cows down on th run, rite up tbtthr barn. (we sure had him trained). Father always iiked to P1ay jokes, one time at Christmas ~ve, they got us little ones t,) bed early, & Father got all of Mothers kettles out & piled them on top of each other, & tied A string to the bottom one & run it under the door into his bed room, the n r morning just befor day light he creaped in to Ada'~ & my bed room, & woke us up, & said 1n soft voice,( I think he has been, & that was all it took, we jumped out of bed, so quite & excited, & creaped out & just as we got almost to the door Father pullee( the string, And down come all the kettles such A bang. I dont think we ever hit the floor till we was in bed with our heads coverr up. & our hearts just A " palpa tating." One day we were eating dinner, & we used to alwaays ha.e A bucket of water~rom the april standing by the table, to drink. after we got through our dinner Mother said to me, Irene take that bucket of water"'& I said, " I did'nt bring it in" & Mother grabed me & Father could see what she had in mind & he Juaped up & grabed me & my head went down to the bottom,of the bucket of water., I think the bucket of water went out much faster a 1.an it come in.One time my brotherGeo had ?een pickl~g cherries & had been eating A lot of them, after a while we were all sitting out under~rees resting. & Geo. was sittIng on a blg, paatboard bo~., soon the crerries started .to play the band, & we all started to . laugh & my Step a d th was, there &. she Just through up her arms & said " GOOD LORD" & Geo got laughing s h d th t h . 'h . gr n mo er was up In the air, & he could'nt get out & BOY h' a ar a e went t rough the box, with his h· -- was e ever playi ng th" ' • My Grand hlother Harbertson, got very sick she had e ch erri BAND. "We never will for get that. Of and soon she died, 26- July-1895. & was burried i cathneeOr d th~ stomach,.so she went to live with her daughter, Mary Ann Gill. n e g en CltV CematpTv.
