Show ~slleet)) My grand father lived alone for some time, in A little frame house not Far to the north from our home, then he married "Roemma Garner TErry., she had had 13- children with her first husband, aome of had paased aw&$, but ahe brought 4-or 5- to liv with her & grandfather for A while, befor ~ long they got married & moved to Idaho. She uaed to get on her high horse every on in II while, & she would awing her fist back & forth in front of his face, & he would ju.t Bit there·- Finely he said- " you can allyou want to but never lay your hands on me,2Us kids used to go up & keep him company quiet often, One day I was up there I said to him" GRANDPA let me cut your ·h air, He said "O.K. He was always A kind old sole. I was only about l2-or-13, then. so got the sizors & clippers & went to work, he always wore his hair out over his ears- & side burns & beard. So I went to work, & I ever trim him up cute. I trimed all the hair off his ears &. side burns, & I dont know what else, he sat there so peasful, 1il he was enjoying"it. soon his wife steped in, O-B Q YO she just went right up through the ceiling. ahe was sure mad, & she said You would sit there & let anyone cut your ass of & never say A word. & he just smiled. " think I took off for home. It was'nt after that till he passed away. 3- Feb- 1909. & was burried in the Ogden City Cern cematery. by his wife,& ro.mma ,soon moved to Idaho with her family. The night t~~::~tOe* Grand Father died we were eating SUOPp~& we heard Roemma coming down the path jus A screamilg. & Father jumped up & said to the boys "cm.e on" & they all went on the run. & she said Grandpa is dead, & Father S8 where is he & she said, around to the back. so Father ran around there & there he was, kneeling on the edge of the old cutter wi arm _ ~ ~up over the dash board, Father said if he had made one strugle he would of fell off. four of my oldest brothers when they got 01 enough went with their Father & took up carpenter work, & went to work with their Father. they were called) Harbertson Contracto They did'nt get far away from home as they had to go by horse & bu~gy, They built many homes in Morgan. Father built our home wh they moved to South Weber. It was A rock building & was A nice home at that time. It had threeb •• rooms,A good size dineing ro & A parlor, ir~t~aul way between the dinning room & the kitchen,.Then a hawl room going down the basement, & going up st Up stares was large bed room where the boys slept. A nice big yard, with scrubs & shade trees & lawn. There was A good size po of water just north of the house where us kids spent lots of play time, there were· lots of frogs in the pond, & at night the fro would sing us to sleep; There was A big canal just A little west of our home, which was cemented later. Father & the boys used go swiming in it. Father used to put us smaller ones on his back' swim with us. we thou~ht that wa. great. When we got a little older, I asked Mother if us sirls could go in the canal. & she said2 ~no, so after a while we de~ided to try it any way, So my brother Joe's wife (NELL) And Ada & my brother Willes wife's sister Ldna & my self,went down there, Nell sit on , the bank & they let Edna & I down in the canal with a rope. the water was deep & swift, & slick on the bottom. we had not hardly got in when ~dna got down the stream a little further than me, when my feet went out from under me & I went under, .the wa was so swift that ~dna could hardly get back to me, I went down, & come up, & down I went again & was just was going down the t l when ~dna reached me. Ada & Nell was screamins on the bank, & throad Bdna the · rope & they pulled me out just in time •• we desid~, right there that it was much better to listen to our dear Mother. Jo we did8nt try that again. Mother worked hard taking care of her big family,& helpingon the farm, we always had a Big garden,& in the spring it was so gOl to have all the young potatoes, some about the size of a walnut,& larger, young peas & corh & every thing else to eat when they 1 young & fresh. We also had all the fresh fruit of all kind to eat .• Mother never had A do~tor when having her babies, till the one. she always had A mid wife, (Mrs Christen Fernelious) she used to try to help with the washing sitting up in bed. They only had a old washer th~t you had to turn by hand, it did'nt do much cleaning, so they had to scrub part of the cloths on old wash board. ,ihen she wouldf, the ironing they had to heat the irons on the old iron cook stove. ~~en my sister Lizzie got older she worked hard heUping Mother,take care of the little ones, & cooking for them all. also helpin, on the farm. when she got about l8-or19- some times she would go work out for other people & she only go.#3.0U per week. then shf soon gut married, To Archie T. Hill. They also lived on A farm, & had to work hard. Father & the boys were gone most of the week building homes & ect. & they would only come home on week enus, if they were far ~~ Une ~at, ~ight when w~ were expecting them home, my sister Ada & I run down to the canal to meet them, they stoped & picked us , ~ I . sit on lathers lap 1n the front Beat & Ada sat on Parleys lap in the back seat, we just got seated & one of the horses look~d around & seen me sitting on fathers lap & it got scared & away they went, & Joe coulu't hold them, they were just young horsss a kind of wild, they belonged to the boys. ,Parley held Ada in his arms & jumped out with her, but F~ther could not hanly me so .goe ?o he threw me & one of the wheals went over my leg., 1'he horses never stoped till they fJot up to the barn • . After A while Father oc I~other built them A nice home at 2050- Madison Ave. Ogden, Utah. & they moved in ,in 1922. lie lived there till 1~25. When Fath got got sick & passed away in about A week on 19-April-1925. Mother remained in her home theri till ~52. when she become ill. 1\ |
