Some mornings the weather was so bad, the children could hardly make it to school. aome times the wind was blowing so bad that we would have to hold on to iI. pole or tree for A few minutes to keep it from blowing ue over •. It was nothing to A·Ycyote by the !lide of the road. 'fhere was 1\ patch of oak brush up on the siue of the mountain not far from our home, and every night the cyotes would go around anu arouna the oak brush & howle. You had to always be on the look out for snakes, Mother used to take her churn up on the hill side by our sprini, where we asways got our wat e r, As we never had our water piped to our house for some time. Lots of time when we would go to get the churn there would be snakes raped around the churn. aome times rattlers. she put the chu: up there to keep it cool in hot w.ather. One day Mother went down the orchard to pick some rasberrys, & as she waH picking, she would squat down to pick the lower brancl & one time A big Rattler anake crawled out from under her, she got so scared that she draped all hol, & ran home u told Father, al he went down & hunted around & found it & killed it. he said it sure was A big one. It waa A wonder it had not struck at her. ie did'nt th i nk any thing of killing A snake & skining it k using it's skin for A hat band. We used to have A black dog we used t, call hIG. A ratterler bit him on the nos~ & it swelled up therr times biger than it was, we thought sure it would kill him, but he finely got over it. many times we would take the dog down the orchard with us & we would tell him to ( hunt him up) & he would all through the weeds & if there was A snake he would grab it & kill it •• And the boys useu to pick the dog up in their arms and ahow him the cows up on the hill &' as soon as he would spy them away he would go, & bring the cows down on th run, rite up tblth ' barn. (we sure had him trained). Father always l iked to P1ay jokes, one tjme at Christmas ~ve, they gut us little ones t,) bed early, & Father got all of lothera kettles out & piled them on top of each other, & tied A string to the bottom one & run it under the door into his bed room, the n' morning just beror day light he creaped in to Ada'S & my bed room, & woke us up, & said in soft voice,( I think he has been, & that was all it took, we jumped out of bed, so quite & excited, & creaped out & just as we got alaoat to the door Father pullee, the string, And down come all the kettles such A bang. I dont think we ever hit tbe floor till we was in bed with our heads cover, up. & our hearts just A " palpa tating." One day we were eating dinner, & we used to alwalYs ha.e A bucket of water~rolD the spril standing by the table, to drink. after we got through our dinner Mother said to me, Irene take that bucket of wate~& I s~id, " I did'nt br i ng it jn" & Mother grabed me & Father could see what ahe had in mind .\ he jumped up & grabed me & my head went down to the bottom of the bucket of water., I think the bucket of water went out much faster a lian it come in One time my brother Ceo ~~~t~~:no~i~k~~~ ~::~~!:;d&b~ad b:~~ne~~!ng A lot of them, after a while we were all sitting out under i;ees resting. & Geo. waa was , there ~ she just through ~~'her arms .\c~:r~1~eG~~~ri~~D~0 ~l~y thetb~nd'h& we all started to laugh, & my St~p grand.other was up In the air, & he could ' nt get out & BOY , e o go aug ing ao hard that he went through the box with his h.
