The house was built on property owned by the Dallin family l:¥ince 1888 , when it was purchased from James Hegney by Cyrus ' father , Thomas Dallin , a miner and pioneer settler of Utah County . Cyrus Dallin was born in Springville Nov . 22 , 1861 . In 1879 , at the age of 18 , he went to work in the Tintic mining distr i ct as a cook and ore sorter. Dallin was not destin.ed to follow the mining career of his father , howev..er, as he soon earned local recognition for his exceptional'artistic ability and was pursuaded by a mining official to develop his talent with, further training in Boston , Mass . Arriving in Boston in'1884 , Dallin received instruction from noted sculptor Truman Bartlett . He later studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Julian Academy in Paris (1899) . In 1923 he received a Master ' s degree from Tufts College and in 1937 was awaFded ·an h@norary Doctor ' of Arts degre& from Boston University. - OVer a career which spanned six decades , Dallin distinguished himself as one of the ,nation ' s for~most sculptors.
