Show The Stockton dredgers, which are mounted on wheels with traction drive, move along the banks of the canals by their own power and are by far the most economical and useful dredgers of a small type ever used in Imperial Valley. They not only have greatly reduced the cost of dredging operations in the smaller canals, but have also made it possible to keep the water going all of the time, as hitherto, when silt accumulated so as to interfere with the flow of water, the water was cut out of the canals and the silt removed by scrapers operated by horse power. In the year 1915 the necessity for keeping the surface of the Colorado River, during the low water period, at a sufficient elevation to discharge the water ordered by Imperial Valley through the Hanlon gate, became a vital question. We were facing a serious water shortage, with the discharge of the Colorado River decreasing daily. After conferring with chief engineer, Mr. J. C. Allison, it was decided to attempt the construction of a temporary weir of brush and sand across the Colorado River, near the mouth of the Intake Canal, in the hope of diverting sufficient water for our needs. The attempt was successful, the weir being built from the Arizona to the California short, a distance of 900 feet, at very light expense, and serving a purpose that the original rock weir could never have served. If not forbidden by the United States government in the future, this weir replaced each season at the beginning of the low water period, will always make it possible to discharge during low water the entire flow of the river, as has been done during the winter of The New River flume, to better serve the west side of New River, was built by your receiver in the early spring of 1915, at a cost of $89,674.70. |
