Show 160 -- 156-- Grand Canyon between El Dufar and the North Rim. R. 350- 351. " Q The word ' canyon' is loosely used by different people; and I wanted to see what you mean when you say that the river runs in a canyon. Take your photograph No. 40. Green River in canyon. Now, one bank there ( indicating) does not appear to consist of high rock walls at all - this one here ( indicating). " A ( Examining exhibit) That is just entering Labyrinth Canyon. " Q Well, then, above that, you do not call that the canyon and yet it is the valley of the river. " A That is the valley. Between Greenriver and the mouth of the San Rafael, the river flows through a more or less open valley, where the canyon walls or rock walls are not high; they may be 100 feet as a maximum, or 50 feet. " Q Well, then, assuming that by ' canyon' you mean wherever the river enters between two high rock walls " A High rock walls; yes, sir." R. 351. The average width of the Green River above the San Rafael is not materially different than below. The rock walls therefore, which are on either side of the river, have little or no effect upon the width of the stream. From will Creek Immediately below Moab, the Colorado flows into a canyon which has no open spaces as there are on the Green above the mouth of the San Rafael. R. 352.
