Show 100 -- 96-- I assume he did. " Mr. Farnsworth: It does not matter. Go ahead. " The Witness: He was going over that stretch inside of a week. " By Mr. Blackmar: " Q All right; go ahead. A We struck with our small boat with the outboard mortar several times at the bar at the mouth of Salt Wash at Mile 3.6. Now, for about 4 1/ 2 miles, or 66 per cent of the time traversed that morning, the river was bending and the channel followed the outside of the bends. While we were going around those bands, it was generally unnecessary to take soundings to locate the channel. In practically every case where the river went around the bend, there was sufficient channel, in general, so that no soundings were necessary . Wherever the river straightened out in any way between bends, it was the practice to take soundings. Now, in this particular stretch the crossing bars were probably between Miles 4 and 5, and again between Miles 7 and 8. I have shown on Plate 17 [ also Plates 16 and 19] ( indicating Complainant's Exhibit No. 10) the approximate course followed by the boats, with dotted black lines. I have shown by a red circle with a dot each time the large motorboat was observed to have been stuck and required some pushing off to get off the bar." R. 213- 214.
