Show 6 -- 3-- published in 1927 by the MacMillan Company, is identified by the witness, who stated that Mr. Kolb was known as an explorer and a historian of the Colorado River. R. 39 He has delivered various lectures on the Colorado River, at the American Museum of Natural History in New York; the Columbia Institute of Arts and Sciences in New York; the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences in Brooklyn; Columbia University Club; Princeton Club; the Lyric Theater, in Baltimore, and Various other places. He is an active member of the Explorers' Club. R. 39. After carefully reading all of the data on the Colorado River he decided to make his trip at relatively high water. All previous Expeditions had gone at lower levels of water, but he concluded from the experiences of Powell, Stanton and others, that a relatively high level of water would make for more danger but better speed and less work. R. 39. Accordingly, instead of using small boats such as the Government expedition used in 1921, he designed his boats after those used by Powell and Stanton. His two larger boats were 22 foot long, 8 feet in the beam, ( R. 40) built of half- inch Mexican mahogany, on very heavy oak ribs and keels. The boats has three water- tight compartments, forward, amidships, and aft, and were intended to be unsinkable. The smaller boat was 16 feet long, built of 5/ 8 inch cedar, on the same |
