Show 118 -- 114-- In this book Mr. Freeman refers to certain rapids in Cataract Canyon which he calls by the official numbers. This book is in the library of the Department of the Interior, Geological Survey, and in so far as it is descriptive, it not being a scientific work, it is considered authoritative work on the Colorado River. It is a historical book; " as a book that would be read by any one exploring the river, or any party going down the river. Mr. Freeman accompanied the Survey parties. A large amount of his experience was when he accompanied Survey parties as a boatman or boatman's helper, and from that he obtained enough knowledge of the river to write a very interesting book, which is historical and, really, a very remarkable book of the Cataract Canyon and of the river as a whole." R. 244. Complainant's Exhibit No. 82, " Characteristics of the Colorado, Green and San Juan Rivers, as shown by Current Meter Measurements," by W. G. Hoyt, was received in evidence. R. 246- 248. " I doubt if I have any conclusion in there. It is just a compilation of data at the basic Gase gauging stations which show certain things. The meat of that report is these plates ( indicating); all the information is shown on these plates. I make no conclusions." R. 247- 248. Any conclusions reached in that report by him are based on information taken at the gauging stations, the official record, and where any views are expressed they are based on his previous experience as an engineer with rivers of various types throughout the country.
