Show 44 -- 41-- some cases in the valley bottoms. " Q What kind of vegetation? " A It is the desert type. Sagebrush is, perhaps, the dominant type of the mesas. There is scanty grass and extensive cedars. On the higher mountains which rise above the plateau, such as La Salle Mountain, Blue Mountain, and so on, there is yellow pine and scene spruce. It is desert vegetation, and not very abundant. " Q What about the inhabitants of that country, as to numbers? " A There are very few. " Q Now, I am referring still to the Colorado. " A In the Colorado country, there are very few inhabitants, outside of Moab Valley and Castle Creek Valley. There are very few inhabitants through the country; an isolated settler and one or two ranches which employ a few men. In the Colorado country, I would say that there are less than 100 people, outside of Moab Valley and Castle Creek Valley; perhaps considerably less than that; perhaps as low as 50. " Q What do you mean by Castle Creek Valley? " A That is the Valley of Castle Creek. It is here ( indicating on map). There are five or six ranches in the valley of Castle Creek. " Mr. Farnsworth: I have glanced through this report. I do not think that you need to cover it if you want to save time." R. 108- 109. On the Colorado River between Moab and the junction of the Green and Colorado, he does not know of anybody |
