Show Record ran a line through Cataract Canyon, then picked up old line at Bullfrog, and worked on down and continued the work which Mr. Trimble and Major Fowler were doing. I can't tell you the date I entered the Colorado River. 1469 The month was July. With the one boat from the Fremont 1470 River we worked to Bullfrog Creek, at the head of Glen Canyon. I don't know the mileage. We were on the river all the time. At the time we entered Colorado River the water was about average. We were working very slowly because we had to work on the side canyons doing topography up to 3900 feet elevation. We had a 1600 foot open boat with about 6 inch draft. 1471 We experienced some difficulties in operating the boat. There were lots of shoals in the river. we had sand waves. We had to be pretty careful on account of our load. There were only two of us in the boat. There wasn't room for the whole crew. The reat of them went along the shore of the river and carried the line. With the shoals and sand bars it took time to pick a channel where there was enough water to float the boat through without getting stuck. We came out of the river about September 10th. We left our boat there for Mr. Wimmer to haul supplies down to the parties below, as I remember. Those supplies were hauled in by truck from Salina, Utah, and by wagon down Bullfrog Creek to its 1473 mouth. When we met the sand waves, if we couldn't miss them we would turn the boat sideways and ride through that way. At Bullfrog Creek we had a four- horse team and wagon to take us out. We went to Thistle, Utah, and then took the train from there to Greenriver, Utah. On arrival at Greenriver we loaded up the boats and started down the river. 1475 The boat was 16 feet long, 4 feet beam and about 20 inch sides. It drew 8 to 10 inches with the load we had on it. The motor was fastened on the back. There was in the neighborhood of 1000 pounds in the holds and two of us on the deck. The other |
