OCR Text Record mouth of the San Juan and the partial portage were the only two instances of portage of which I have any knowledge. It was in the latter part of August when I met Mr. Loper 946 at the mouth of the San Juan going up stream to a supply cache. I was at the mouth of Piute Canyon , about 20 miles from the mouth of the San Juan when Mr. Loper started up stream to get those sup-plies. The supplies were cached in Nokai Canyon. Nokai Canyon is about 17 miles up the river from the mouth of Piute Canyon. Mr. Loper and Mr. Miser went up stream with a boat and later came down stream with a boat- load of supplies. There was no other 947 nearer place where supplies could have been obtained. I did not say that Mr. Wimmer brought supplies from Lees Feery to Aztec Creek. The supplies were brought by Mr. Marrs in a government boat from Lees Ferry to a point near Aztec Creek. There was no other place down stream where supplies could have been obtained than Lees Ferry. Aztec Creek is about 9 miles below the mouth of the San Juan. The motor boat that contained these 948 supplies was 24 feet long. I don't know the width. There were several men in the boat. I do not know how much of a load of sup-plies was brought in on that boat. It was not a common incident for a cargo of supplies to be coming up the river. We had just gotten supplies at the mouth of the San Juan that Mr. Wimmer left. I am not certain as to the quantity. Mr. Wimmer brought those 949 supplies in a boat. I knew that Mr. Wimmer was operating a boat carrying supplies that were furnishing certain of the government parties down there. We did not have the same cook with our party all the way through. Our first cook thought he had appendicitis. Mr. Loper took him down the river in a boat to Lees Ferry to about 76 miles up the Colorado from Lees Ferry. A Mr. Allen accompanied Mr. Loper and the cook. When Mr. Loper returned we were below the mouth of Aztec Creek, about 9 miles from the mouth of the San Juan. Mr. Loper had a new cook with him. He went down and came back in - 131-
