Show Record started from the dock at Moab and the first day we camped in the vicinity of Kane Creek well, about 18 miles south of Moab by the river. We had trouble just below the Moab dock, where the river takes a turn, both going down and coming up. We had difficulty going down the river where the stretches of the river were straight. On the bends we had no difficulty. We were grounded off and on all the time. In coming back we were able to go over some of the stretches where we got grounded when we went down. 1320 From the Shafer well on down our experience was just about the same as it was getting to that point. In grounding we always jumped overboard as quickly as possible in order to prevent the boat from settling in the sand and would go in water about waist- deep, indicating we were on the deep 1321 side of a bar. That happened several times. Generally that condition existed down to the junction with the Green River. I remember a place on the Colorado River near the mouth of the Green River which is referred to as the slide. We camped there one night. I could not give its age. I would say geologically it is a recent slide of debris, rocks, and boulders that have fallen 1322 from a near- by cliff. It is simply a place where the rocks have broken off and fallen into the river. 1323 From the slide we proceed down to the Green River and then went up the Green River for about a mile and a half and then turned 1324 around and came back and camped at the slide over night and then proceeded on up to Moab. We had the same trouble with sand bars and groundungs. 1326 Carrol Edward Dobbin testified on cross examination as fol-lows: 1327 One time previously to the trip I made on the Colorado River described in my direct examination, I made a short trip from Moab down to the Shafer oil well, 18 miles down stream and turned right 1328 around and came back to Moab. I used my own boat. In making the trip down the Colorado River from Moab I - 174- |
