Show Record I have observed it pretty low and dry two or three times, I think. 574 I cannot fix the time of the year. I cannot tell the year. I came up to Cortez in 1896. I saw one ferry boat on the San Juan River above Bluff City - might have been at Comb Wash. The Navajos crossed once in a while on it. I was never down where the placer mines are. 575 James McEwen testified on cross examination as follows: I think I have seen the river dry below Shiprock. The farmers would take all the water out above. It was pretty low at Shiprock one year. I cannot fix that year. It was between 1896 and 1906. That is as near as I can fix that occasion. Jens Nielsen was recalled and testified for complainant 576 on re- direct examination as follows: As to the low water that I testified to this morning I think I can fix the year as 1893, the summer the river went dry and I rode from Bluff City to Fruitland on horse back. Kumen Jones was recalled and testified on examination by 577 Special Master as follows: I think I have lived at Bluff City longer than any wit-ness who has testified here today. I have lived at Bluff right along. The growth of Bluff has been more or less a steady decline from the time we first settled there. Its population now is less than 100 people, I think. When I first went in there all the settlers did not stay at Bluff. I think there were about 55 men who stayed with me. I do not know how many children or men folks there were. The largest number in the Town of Bluff between the date I first got there and the present time would be, I think, 150 578 to 200. A great many of them did not stay at Bluff. They went on to Colorado and some went on to Arizona. Guy S. Newkirk testified for complainant on direct examination as follows: - 88- 1204 |
