Show Record right north of Mexican Hat. It is typical of the country in there. No. 26 is a picture of the canyon above Soldier Basin, 6 miles east of Mexican Hat. No. 27 is a picture of a part of a Soldier Basin. 700 No. 28 is a photograph of the formation north of the river, in lime creek. I have had occasion to observe floods on the San Juan river. The high water comes about June 10th. We do not call that a flood. The highest water we have is in September when the fall rains come. 701 year we do not get any flood at all. The spring high waters are regular, seasonal fluctuations, while the fall high waters depend upon the amount of rain. I have never operated a boat on the San Juan river. I have known of boats crossing the river but I never knew of any going up and down it. I was in the freighting business in that country from 1892 702 to 1901, supplying the placer miner. I never knew of any of the prospectors bringing their supplies down by boat. I never took any down by boat. When the rains come in September they fill the dry washes pretty rapidly. Like a cloud- burst. Sometimes they last an hour and the water is gone. I have never seen the San Juan River when it was not running. 703 Take the river east of Bluff in the sand flats, there it has an under- flow, a little streams runs from one pool to another. That is what we call a dry river. I saw the river in that condition the first time in 1883. I saw it again in 1892, I believe. I have seen the river dry below Chinle wash. In 1917 it got pretty low but it did not dry clear up. We had what we call a couple of good irrigating streams running at Goodrich. They were not 20 feet across them. I have seen other years when the water was that low but I could not call the dates. The two I have mentioned I remember. They were along in 704 September or October, when we did not have rain. - 107- |
