My business during my life has been farming, stock-raising, trading with the Navajo Indians and mining. I am familiar with the San Juan River in Utah. I have lived in that neighborhood all my life. I went into that country when a boy about 10 years from 593 Juab County, Utah. My father went into that country with six wagons and a band of probably 100 head of loose horses. We went through the Southern part of Utah, over the Escalante Desert to what is known as Hole- In- The- Rock, crossing the Colorado, a few miles above the mouth of the San Juan River. From Hole- In- The- Rock we went to where they were starting Bluff City and then up to another Mormon settlement called Montezuma, about 15 or 17 miles above Bluff. We established a residence there.
