Show Record two boats were 16 foot boats rounded sides; kind of Galloway type 1476 with a draft of eight inches, loaded. The purpose of the expedition was to run a river traverse from the junction of the Green and the Grand Rivers through Cataract Canyon and on down as far as Lees Ferry for the purpose of a pro-posed reservoir site, Lees Ferry down. On the trip that I made overland from Green river down to the Colorado River, I saw, as I remember, a small ranch at where the road rosses the San Rafael River and a small ranch at the foot of Henry Mountain, approximately 40 miles from the Colorado River. After I got onto the river on this first trip I saw some 1478 other people. Cornelius Ekker and his boy brought the boat in and at Hite there was a man, In that section I only saw the ranch at Hite. I did not see any placer miners in there. I saw so boats carrying either freight or passengers. 1479 On the second trip, at Greenriver we tied the boats side by side. The boat with the motor was in the middle. Before we got to the mouth of the San Rafael we hit a few shoals, and a few small sand waves. We kept one man on the look- out for channels. We arrived at Greenriver about the middle of September. In that stretch it was necessary several times for one to go overboard and help push the boats along. 1480 From the mouth of the San Rafael to the end of Labyrinth Canyon there were more shoals than above on account of the recent high waters in the San Rafael River. The situation in Stillwater 1481 Canyon was practically the same as in Labyrinth. From Stillwater Canyon to the commencement of the cataracts in Cataract Canyon we did not encounter any difficulties in the operation of the boat. Above the confluence of the two rivers we hit a bar and broke the propellor shaft of the motor. We then removed the motor. 1484 In my opinion, with the same equipment, and assuming the motor was in good condition, I could not have brought those boats, under those conditions up the river. |
