Show Record way up Indian Creek, a distance of 48 miles, making approximately 50 square miles. The country we covered on this trip is a very arid country and very rough. There are a great many canyons. Water is exceedingly scarce except in the Colorado River. During our two months and a half down the river we saw two cow- boys and an airplane scouting down the river. I made another trip on a boat in the early part of 1926. 994 I did considerable work later on in 1926 on the Green River desert, extending from Green River desert south to the junction of the Dirty Devil with the Colorado River. We examined 1000 square miles, ap-proximately 13 townships. The country in there is divided from the tops downward to a series of benches or plateaus. The Green River desert is covered mainly by wind- blown sand and sand dunes. Toward the south end there is considerable cedar timber. The country is exceedingly rough, consisting of canyons in sandstone. There is no population in that country at all, except 996 a few oil camps and some sheepherders who move from place to place. 999 There is no town of any size. I made the location for Shafer No. 1 well. In that connection I took into consideration what would be necessary to get 1001 casing, tools, and so forth, in there to drill that well. We con-sidered, during the exploration period, it would perhaps be the 1003 least road of resistance to transport the machinery down the river. I made a recommendation to my employers that during the drilling of this wild- cat well that the river be used to bring in the freight. 1007 I made that recommendation because it was cheaper. In the event the oil well turned out to be a commercial field I believe the construction of a road would be more economical than transportation on the river. 1009 Map marked 122 is a map of the land west of Greenriver and west of Cataract canyon. The blue purplish lines represent 1010 trips I made on horseback during 1926. The red marks represent trips made by engineer Heist of Salt Lake. The brown marks represent |
