Show Record The progress through Cataract Canyon was comparatively show because we had to carry the line of traverse through at the same time we went through with the boats. Ellsworth Kolb was the 1485 head boatman, Emory Kolb had his own boat taking pictures. The rapids were looked over before the boats were run. By very careful work we were able to get the last rapid in the canyon without smashing up a boat. At the last rapid, I believe, Emory Kolb was running one of the boats through and he ran on a rock. His boat was there approximately two days. As I remember we did not portage any for the rapids in 1486 Cataract Canyon. Going down Cataract Canyon I believe there are talus slopes on one side or the other all the way through. There are no box canyons except at the last rapid. From the end of Cataract Canyon down to Lees Ferry we had 1487 only one boat, the Kolbs took the others. Through Glen Canyon to Lees Ferry we had shoals, sand bars and sand waves. The water was lower than the time before and we had more sand bars. We ran into rapids in there and it was neces-sary for some one to go overboard frequently. As I remember we got new supplies at Bullfrog Creek. We left them there and just picked them up. We got to Lees Ferry around the first of November. We left our boats at Lees Ferry. The Southern California Edison Com- 1489 pany wanted to use them later. On my second trip from Greenriver down to Lees Ferry we passed several bars with houses on but I don't remember seeing any one along the river. We saw a man at Hite. I did not meet any boats on the river carrying freight or passengers, except the Edison company had a large flat bottom boat hauling supplies from 1490 Lees Ferry to Fowler's camp, at the crossing of the Fathers. The boat was 30 feet long, 10 or 12 foot beam. I was next on the Green River in 1922. K. W. Tribble was in charge of party. We started from Green River, Wyoming, and |
