Show Record flood that I know about. The heavy rains come ordinarily about 536 three a year. I have seen the San Juan once when it was practically dry. That was about 1904, somewhere in there. Orange J. Carson testified on cross examination as follows: 537 There was only one big flood that I know of in my experience with that river and that is the one I have mentioned. Ordinarily we have about three heavy rains a year. During the time of those heavy rains the river rises some. William Butler testified for complainant on direct examination as follows: I have lived at Farmington, New Mexico, since 1901. I am 67 year old. I have been down the San Juan River to the Four Corners. 538 I recall the flood of 1911. I was not at home when the flood came. I was at Santa Fe. I came up to Antonio, Colorado. We were held up there for a few days. They would carry us no farther. We got a team and drove through to Apache Reservation down on the San Juan above Blanco 4 or 5 miles, which is about 15 miles above Farmington. The flood did damage at Farmington. It destroyed 539 crops and houses, pastures and fences. The condition of the San Juan River water varies at Farmington, Bloomfield and other ports where I have come in contact with it and crossed it. At Farmington it carries very heavy silt and sand. I know of no material change in it since I came to that country. As far as my observation goes the same condition prevails at the Four Corners. I have had contact with the Indians there. The Indians 540 have not used any boats to my knowledge. I have only know of a few ferry boats on the San Juan River crossing it while I have been there.
