The boats drew 4/ 1/ 2 inches 765 empty, and 8 inches in the center when loaded up to 1200 pounds. 767 The rocker sllows the boat to be turned very quickly. Prior to making the trip I had crossed the river several times about one mile above Bright Angel trail. My brother had had considerably more experience than I had on the river. He swam a great many horses across the river, holding their heads close to a 768 boat, with one man rowing and the other holding the halter. We found sand bars in the river, islands in the middle of the river with channels on both sides. One channel would be deep and possibly the other would be shallow. We would ground frequently on the sand bars. We had an extra oar and would push the boat back in the channel. Between Green River, Wyoming, and Greenriver, Utah, we noticed ranchess in different sections had boats tied up to the 786 shore. They were hurriedly made flat bottom boats. We did not see
