Show Record raise, and when the rain was over it would go down. The river is variable as to depth. The condition at Bluff on the river has changed since I went there in 1880. There were big flats and bottoms all along the river and they have been washed away. The river is on one side one day and over somewhere else the next day. It is a quick sandy formation. When the water hits the quick sand 448 it melts it. When the river is high it tears right in and washes out the whole bottom. Practically all of the land that was there when I first went there has been changed and washed out and new sediment formed in place of it. I have been connected with an enterprise to attempt to control the river at Bluff. We ripwrapped, put cottonwoods along the bank of the river and loaded them down with rock, and at one time put a dam across the river and turned it in another course altogether above Bluff about a mile. We got effect from these improvements. The bottom where Bluff is now located is the only bottom that I know of that has not been moved with the high water and quick sands. Three or four miles below Bluff the country has been washed away. The place we call Sand Island Flats, a mile or two wide, has all been washed out. Below there the country boxes in and there is not much bottom land for about 75 miles down, 449 only little places here and there. There are rapids in the river in places. Jens Nielsen on cross examination, testified as follows; 449 Below Chinle Creek and before the San Juan enters the Colorado there is only one place where there is any great amount of bottom land, that is about 4 miles. There are bottoms occasionally all the way down, but the biggest bottoms are from Bluff up. There is not much bottom land below Chinle Creek. The channel is confined 450 from Chinle Creek down. From Chinle Creek up it is now a very different situation. When I first became acquainted with the river, the channel from Bluff on down about 5 miles spread out all over and washed out the bottoms; from there on down it was pretty - 62- |
