Show Record Then we retraced our way to Moab. 1242 1243 As to the character and quantity of sediment in the Colorado 1244 River I took samples of water with a tumbler at a number of points. I found, comparing that with my experience on the lower Mississippi River, that the charge of sand was extremely heavy. As to the quantity of sand, the only indications I have are official records of the lower Colorado River in the vicinity of Yuma. The gradient of the river, as shown by the maps, is over one foot per mile, with steeper sections that considerably exceed one foot per mile. 1246 I know of no other river in the United States of the character 1247 of the Colorado as I saw it which is commercially navigated. I am simply stating as a fact that I know of no river in the United States comparable in character to the Colorado River. 1250 We went over land by automobile to Greenriver town, where I inspected the first riffle below the railroad bridge on the Green River on August 29. The riffle in question at the time of my in-spection showed a very considerable drop in the water surface above and below the riffle, which drop I should estimate at least two and a half feet. The water was running through at a very rapid rat. A number of boulders were showing above the surface of the water in spots. 1252 From Greenriver we went by automobile through Hanksville to the upper portion of North wash, where we were overtaken by a 1255 wagon. At the mouth of North wash we found the boat man who had been engaged, and the boat already in the river and in condition to go down stream. 1256 We left the mouth of North wash at one- thirty P. M. on September 1st, 1929, with a boat 16 feet long, 4 foot beam, very pronounced keel, with an out- board motor of eight horse- power lashed to it, and with two sets of oars. In describing my trip down stream I am referring to sheet 12 of Exhibit 10 which shows the mouth of North wash as about 167 1/ 2 miles above Lees Ferry and the miles re-ferred to on the man are based on Lees Ferry, mile 0. |
