Show Record and obtained a 500 foot steel line. Sometimes we would go down the river without using it and at other times we would have to use it four or five times, probably. We had an anchor weighing 125 pounds on the big boat and we used it for different purposes. 1184 I never used a map in navigating the river. I found maps were of no use because I found one week the channel would be according to the map and the next week it wouldn't be there at all; so I just tried to remember where I went last, and tried to strike it next time, but very often would miss. The sand waves gave danger in upsetting little boats if you did not look out. You run onto sand waves during May and June once in a while during high water, other times during cloud- bursts, where a wash will come into the river with greet force carrying 1185 sand. I have seen the sand waves last for probably a day. 1187 I have had experience on the Colorado River with small boats. Very often I would use a smaller boat to make a trip down to the well and back; especially when they needed something in a hurry or when some one connected with the well wanted to go down. In operating the 27 foot boat I have mentioned, I would have quite a bit of difficulty getting across shallow places if I had very much of a load. I made a trip just recently from Moab to the mouth of the Green River and return with Mr. Ryan and Colonel Dent. We got stuck at various places as usual both going down and coming back. I remember the trip taken by Mr. Hoyt, the government engineer. I met him at the mouth of Green River and helped him get up the Colorado to Moab. We got stuck on sand bars at several places. On this last trip I have mentioned I tried to go up the Green River with cur 27 foot passenger boat with the automobile 1190 engine in it. We had gone about a quarter of a mile and got stuck, and after making only five miles in five hours. We turned around and - 159- |
