Show Record John Galloway testified on re- direct examination as follows: 1111 By quiet water I mean a strip of the river where it is boxed on one side by a permanent bank and below it a riffle or a rapid. That stretch of water we call Labyrinth Canyon. We had quite a lot of swift water and sand bars in there. Stillwater canyon is more confined. There are open spaces where there are sand bars. There are some riffles, but not as bad as they are higher up. They are more calm down in there. I have been through Cataract canyon twice. I did not run all the rapids. I would judge there were 40 rapids in there. When we run a rapid we lined the boat through. 1113 Holland never put a boat in Glen Canyon. 1114 My father used to ship his furs east either from Vernal or Greenriver City, Utah. 1115 There is a ferry boat at Ouray, Utah. There are 4 or 5 row boats around Ouray, Utah, which the Indians use, I believe, in crossing back and forth. 1116 John Galloway testified on re- cross examination as follows: I know there is a large Indian reservation on the Snake River. I do not recollect of ever seeing an Indian with a boat on the Snake River. I define quiet water to mean the still water that is just above a large riffle, where the water is practically still, before it starts to tumble. 1117 John Galloway testified on examination by Special Master as follows: Hanksville is a town of three or four hundred people. I think mostly sheep men. I came through Cataract Canyon twice. The first time I went down alone. The weight of my supplies on that trip would not exceed 500 pounds. I went down the second time with my brother. - 148- |
