Show Record There were 10 men altogether in that party. I was the boatman in charge to handle the boats through the rapids. I was in the 816 service of the Southern California Edison Electric Company. We had two boats, built on the same lines as the ones we had on our previous trip, except they were 18 feet in length and 6 inches wider, that is 4/ 1/ 2 foot beam. They were built at Wilmington, California, and shipped to Greenriver, Utah, by freight. There was another boat. We had three boats. The first two boats I have mentioned cost $ 400 each. The third boats was a light draw about 10 inches when loaded to capacity. We attached an out- board 821 motor to the smaller boat about one half mile below Greenriver. We fastened one boat in tandem style to the motor propelled 822 boat and proceeded down the river in that way. We had some trouble scraping rocks in quick water or lively water below the rapid directly below Greenriver. Two or three times the boats ran into rocks; the bow would run up on the rocks and would hold us for a while. The current would carry the stern around and free us. That happened many times but we didn't think anything of it, because that was just incidental to the work. It wore on the bottom of the boat. We put oak strips on the bottom of the boat to prevent the extra rubbing. Most of our trouble or incidental work on the river for approximately 20 miles was occasional shallow places in the stream, not sand bars but gravel, with an occasional rock, and we would have to manouver to avoid rocks; but we made very good time with that out- board motor that day. On the first day we passed the San Rafael River at 2: 45; at Twin Alcoves at 4: 10 and at 5: 45 on the 823 right side an hour's run below Twin Alcoves. After we left the mouth of the San Rafael, my notes show 824 that we hit one sand bar. At the Double- Bowknot we had trouble. We reached the Bow- knot at 10: 55 the second day. The motor I speak of was on a hinge, or was arranged so when we would run on to any-thing it would come up and would not be injured. We had difficulty of that kind because our speed was greater than it was with the row boats, and sometimes we knew there was a channel but we didn't have |
