Show Record few ranchers. 792 From the mouth of the Green River we proceeded down the Colorado, which was then called the Grand River. It seemed a little higher than the Green River. The rapids began about 4 miles below the mouth of the Green; that is the rapids of Cataract Canyon. That canyon is a little over 40 miles in length, and has 45 bad rapids, I believe. Both of us ran every rapid in Cataract Canyon. We did not line our boats on a one of them and we didn't take our boats out of a single rapid. We have always bragged about it. We had quite an adventure and got through without any serious difficulty. We actually examined every bad rapid in Cataract Canyon 793 before we ran them. We went there to get pictures of putting our boats through violent water; that is what we wanted, some motion pictures, and we were making motion pictures of shooting rapids for the thrill they would give. It was a kind of a sporting 794 event with us. Getting out of Cataract Canyon you come into Stillwater at once. There is a short canyon called Narrow canyon there. The 795 water in Narrow canyon is quiet. I don't remember that we had any trouble in Narrow Canyon. It is about 6 miles long. 796 After you leave Narrow Canyon you enter Grand Canyon. We grounded frequently in Grand Canyon. The Dirty Devil River brought in a lot of sand. The San Juan River enters the Colorado in Glen Canyon. From the mouth of the San Juan on down the river is quieter than it is above. Below the San Juan we grounded fre- 797 quently on sand bars. We climbed out frequently to make pictures. That section of Grand Canyon has canyon walls. They are set back some little distance from the river, possibly 1000 feet. We found bottoms usually either on the one side or the other of the river through there, bottoms 400 feet wide, with quite a growth of willows and vegetation, bent vegatation, but not big trees, willows 20 feet high. Glen Canyon ends at Lees Ferry and the character of water is about the same all through that section, and is quieter 799 than the upper section. We saw three men near Hite. There were |
