Show Record After we got to the mouth of the Green River we went up the Colorado River to what they call the slide. We tried to make the slide but the water whirled us back and into the bank. we then got off the boat and looked over that part of the river called the slide and decided we could not make it and started back to Green River with 732 the boat. Our trip up the Green River was practically the same as going down, only it was not quite as hard; when we hit a sand bar we had a chance to back off. I recall the section of the river known as " Stillwater canyon". We met no sand bars in that section. 733 There was plenty of water there. We got on sand bars in Labyrinth canyon and the sand condition continued up to the mouth of the San Rafael. We had trouble at the mouth of the San Rafael. We stayed there about 2 days. We ran on the San Rafael bar. On the trip we broke one propellor off on the bar. We had one left to go up to Halverson's ranch. There was no damage done till we got to the 734 San Rafael bar coming back. We tied the boat to the shore at Hal-verson's ranch. I then left and went to Grand Junction and I next 735 saw the City of Moab at Halverson's ranch that fall. In the mean time the boat had been remodeled. They put a Scotch marine boiler in it, a new steam engine, a stern wheel and built the boat 10 feet longer. The fuel used was coal. We started down the river again 736 with the boat. It was practically the same as the other one. 737 We went down as far as Valentine bottom, about 100 miles below Green river. The stern wheel helped us getting off the sand bars. It 738 would churn the water out when we got stuck. There were four of us on this second trip. Complainant's exhibit No. 101, being a picture of the " City of Moab", was received in evidence. This picture shows the boat as it was remodeled, the day 739 it was launched. I couldn't say that the channel changed. I know that the sand shifted about. We had no difficulty in turning the boat at Valentine's bottom. We then started up stream. We did not have much trouble coming back until we got up to the gravel bars. On our trip |
