Show Record away from Bluff in 1902. There was a big flood just before I moved to the Blue Mountains. I moved away because I had decided that the flood conditions were such that it was not desirable for me to stay longer. I moved to Venture, San Juan County, Utah. That flood that occurred next before I moved away was the biggest flood I ever saw on the river. Parley Rogerson Butt testified on re- direct examination 560 as follows: When I first went into that country there was a settlement at Moab. In the fall of 1879 I went through there and half of the settlers were living in log houses and others had dug- outs or cellars. There was a ford at Moab across the Grand River at that time. Parley Rogerson Butt testified upon examination by the Special Master as follows: I was one of the first settlers in San Juan County out-side of a few trappers who we e already there. I have been more or 561 less through the Eastern and Central portions of the County. There has been no growth in the population of that County that I know of. There might have been. As the County looks to me there has been a steady growth. The people come in because they think the country is productive for chickens and mulch cows. I was in Monticello the other day. There is and increase in mulch cows, hogs and chickens. I have made several trips in that part of the County where the Colorado and the San Juan come together. There is no country there at all. It is just as soled as the walls of this room. There is a little brush, a few gravel mesas on which a little grass grows, 562 but they are narrow. The soil on the uplands is just cobble stones. Bluff was the first place that the people settled to make a permanent home. There was no talk of gold when I first went in there and no talk of oil.
