Show VI xx The Origin of Watermarkin Paper in/Colour HE art of producing watermarks in colou ‘wasoriginated more than a hundred year ago but the process at the present time i understood or practiced but little. Thi is not only due to the great skill and tedious labou required but to the lack of demand for these paper for commercial uses. Numerous fine specimens o coloured watermarks have been produced in Ital and others in England and France, and while thi painstaking art has been developed to marked perfection very few examples are encountered in ordinary channels The first man to make watermarks in colou was Sir William Congreve who patented his invention December fourth, 1819. Congreve wa born in England in 1772.
