Show OLD»PAPERMAKIN 4 The wove mould covering was also originate by John Baskerville, and the date given for this invention is1750. Baskerville was a printer, living i Birmingham, and it was his desire to get paper fo book printing which afforded a smoother surfac than paper of the laid type. The wove coverin was made of fine brass screening and received it name because it was woven on a loom in the sam manner ascloth. Baskerville had been in the japanning and metal-working trades before becoming printer so he was naturally familiar with this material, as metal screening had been used in Englan for other purposes a number of years before it wa put to use as a covering for paper moulds A section ofa wove mould and the impressio this covering made in the sheets of paper is show in Figure 1 f. The first book to be printed on wov paper was Baskerville's magnificent quarto editio of "Publii Virgilii Maronis Bucolica, Georgica, e ZEneis," which was published in Birmingham i 17577 Another edition of Virgil was issued by th same printer in 17771 under the earlier date of 17757 It is the first printing of the 1757 edition that is o interest on account of the paper upon which it wa printed.
