Show 2 OLD~PAPERMAKIN being made smooth the paper was packed for trans portation by being placed in bundles and wrappe in heavy coarse paper of a brown or grey colour The labels from a number of these old wrapper are of sufficient interest to be reproduced herewith The present methodsused in making handmad paper differ but little from those just described Several improvements in the construction of vat have been made and a steam-pipe now takes th place of the old pistolet, while the primitive stirring-pole has been superseded by an agitator whic revolves in the bottom of the vat, lseeping the pul in motion. Instead of the pulp flowingdirectlyint the dipping-vat, as in former centuries, the fibrou liquid is now forced through a knotter or straine which eliminates all knots and causes the paper s made to be free from lumps, unlike much of th old paper. T he heavy screw-press may still be see in several of the more primitive handmade pape mills in Germany, but the hydraulic-press is no used by allwell equipped vat millsin Europe. However, itwas notadopted until longafter its inventio in 1796, although Joseph Bramah, the originator recommended his press for use in paper mills There are not many mills left that make handmade paper and the number is decreasing ever year. Machines are now made that imitate, but i is not possible to produce the elusive charm o genuine handmade paper by mechanical means Diital image© 2004 Mariot Libary Universty o Uth.
