Show OLD~PAPERMAKIN appear on account of their pleasing formation bu because the filaments that caused them embodie the best method of constructing a mould The moist sheets of pulp were couched directl after forming on pieces of coarse cloth stretche over boards. The first method of drying the pape was to expose the sheets either to the sun or plac them against the sides of heated ovens. In late centuries the paper, each sheet interleaved by cloth, was subjected to pressure by the use of grea stones. These stones acted in the same manner a the screw press which was adopted for pressing th water from paper at a later period These bamboo moulds of the laid pattern wer used by the Persians, and perbaps by the Chinese centuries before the introduction of papermakin into Europe It is interesting to note that a watermarlk in th form of an object or design has never been foun in paper from the period of the vegetable filamen moulds. The ancients probably did not think o this means of marking their paper; or it may hav occured to them, but the vegetable fibre being reluctant to bend into forms, the idea was not carrie to any termination. Of course, the laid-and chainlines of the moulds caused indentations in the pape unintentionally, but no insignia or device wa ever used by the ancients The original of the bamboo mould here picture Digital image© 2004 Mar Library, Universiy of Uah.
