Show 8 OLD~PAPERMAKIN The clover-leaf, trefoil, or "Klee-Blatt", whic Rittenhouse substituted for the fleur-de-lis, wa adapted from the town-mar or seal of the village calle Germantown, a settlement no far distant from the situatio of the paper mill. Thisseal o emblem bhad been in use b the community only a shor time before R:ttenhouse pu it to use as a waterm The next papermark to be adopted by thi pioneer Pennsylvania mill consisted simply of th letters, K R, the initials of Claus Rittenhouse, th founder's son. The nam in Dutch was spelle Klaas. With this initia - mark the clover-leaf wa sometimes introduced o the other hal of the sheet of paper. The initial and clover-leaf here reproduced were traced fro the paper upon which was printed the first issu of "The American Weekly Mercury."
