Show OLD~PAPERMAKIN 7 is usually represented with three locks or strand of hair, evidently meant to symbolize Christ's oneness with the Trinity. In most of these marks th mouth isopen, nodoubt intended to denote Chris teaching. Another watermarlk used in paperdurin the fifteenth century was a hea - of a negro slave. The specime given is from about the year 141 - and it will be noted thata bandag has been pushed from hiseyes, n doubt meant to symbolize freedom. In this papermarlk the hea is crowned, the crown being sur that cannot be conceived today Nothing really artistic in th watermarking of portraits wa accomplished until the middle of the eighteent century, when we find the French and Germa papermalsers making outline portraits of prominen personages.
