Show 9 OL ~PAPERMAKIN three couchings. On the12th. of February,I desire to have some with two layers only to be sent u that they might be printed on the interior laye and returned for another white layer, so that th printing would be in the heart of the paper "Onthe1gth. of February it occurred to me tha agood effect might be produced by leaving part o the interior layer bare so as to produce a coloure border around the edge "Butto proceed in detailing the course of the experiments. All the specimens hitherto produce were either without watermarl or with commo wire watermark. I now conceived that a superio watermark might be produced by a filigree patter cut out in metal, and accordingly on this principl an oval watermark in silver was prepared by Mr Branston. The great security of this description o watermark is that the lines of the pattern ma cross in the most complicated scroll or chequ work which involves a difficult in the imitatio either by varnish or by cutting out the middle leaf "The next improvement which I suggested t Mr. Portal (since 1725 Portals have manufacture the banlkenote paper for the Bank of England) wa to attempt to make the triple paper by three dippings and only one couching, which caused th watermarls to be more brilliant and reduced th amount of labour "I caused another watermark also to be mad Digital image© 2004 Mariot Libary, Universty o Uta.
