The typefoundry wa carried on until 177777 when efforts were made t sell the punches, matrices, and type in Englan but to no avail. The complete outfit was finall purchased in 1779 bya celebrated French scholar M. de Beaumarchais, for the sum of three thousan seven hundred pounds. This gentleman set up on of the finest printing houses on the continent an re-established three paper mills in the Vosges abou fifteen miles from Kehl, where his printing enterprise was located. The best papermakers that coul be obtained from Holland were employed and th paper produced was unequalled at the time In 1790 John Phipps, an Englishman, patented process for teaching writing and drawing by mean of watermarked lines in paper.
