One o the oldest prints representing an interior view of paper mill is from the year 1568, but this engraving, in its crudity, throws no more light on the details of papermaking than does the print of the ol typefoundry, in the same volume, show us ho type was made at that time. It is only by piecin together material from many sources that w areable toarrive at th of old European paper it may be readily per ceived that the sheet ™™ C°"'{2;,"§:,,:‘,‘£'5‘§1_"° Weeld had been formed upo flat moulds, and from the impressions left in th paper by the material of which these moulds wer made, we are not at a loss in determining how th moulds were constructed. These moulds differe slightly in workmanship in the various countrie and even in separate localities of the same country Therefore we have inherited in documents, manuscriptsand books innumerable varieties of paper almost beyond classification.
