Underneath the shield in outline letter was the word "Pensilvania" The shieldand crow device shows a great deal of Dutch and French influence as papermarks of this style had been use PENSILVANI by early papermakers in Holland, who acquire the emblem from France where it had been use as a watermark as early as 1460. The crown an shield with three fleurs-de-lis was the arms o France and this device was frequently used as watermark by the old papermakers of the Lo Countries, probably in reference to the direc descent of the House of Burgundy from the King of France.
