Show 10 OLD~PAPERMAKIN these volumes by measurement instead of by th paper. If a book was printed on a once-folded sheet it would always be a folio no matter how much ruthless or ignorant binder may have cut it down This trimming was possible in the early printe bools as the margins were left large for the note of the readers, so that a folio could have been reduced several inches without interfering with th text. The only way to arrive at the correct size o an old volume is to examine the paper on whic it was printed. In the paper-moulds the chainlines invariably ran the short way of the sheet and the Jaid-lines the longway. In a folio volum the sheets were folded in the centre but the chainlines still ran up and down. No matter if considerable of the margins had been trimmed off it is always possible by this means to see that the boo was originally a folio. In a quarto the paper wa again folded so the chain-lines ran across the page With an octavo the chain-lines ran up and dow as in a folio Before the writer is a book dated 1522 from th Aldine Press, This work is cataloguetf asan octav as its actual measurements would indicate thi size. However, the volume was originally a quart asthe chain-lines in the paper run across the pages On the other hand, the edition of "Aretinus d Bello Gallico" printed by Nicolas Jenson in 1471 is usually set down by the cataloguers as a folio o Digital image© 2004 Mariot Libary, Universty o Uta.
