Show 7 OLD~PAPERMAKIN and may be found in paper from the fifteenth t the eighteenth century. The mark from 1360 i either a melon or leaf, while that of 1390 appear to be a pomegranate. The design from 1435 is cluster of berries and the device dated 1443 is th flower of the pomegranate between two leaves The watermark of the grapes is of Swiss origin an is found in many books printed before 1500. Th pear between two leaves (1461) was a commo mark with fifteenth and sixteenth century papermakers and is found in all shapes and sizes. Th specimen of 1443 is the forget-me-not flower ove a Catherine Wheel, by the great teeth of whic St. Catherine of Alexandria was tortured in 30 A.D. A German writer on the subject of watermarks calls this device a waterwheel, confusin the teeth of the wheel of martyrdom with th buckets ofa wheel used for power. The last tw papermarks are from the fifteenth century an show a deal of ability in both drawing and forming in wire, Up to the eighteenth century whe the flower marks became fewer, there was bu little improvement in their execution which i evidenced by the design given from 1760, a mar representative of this period. The watermarks o vegetation here reproduced were selected from collection numbering several thousands and wer chosen to show the highest artistic developmen reached in the early centuries of watermarking Digital image© 2004 Marriot Libary, University o Utah.
