Show 6 OLD~PAPERMAKIN dates as early as the late fourteenth century The art of forming the wire watermarks to b applied to the moulds has been modified but littl since the origin of the craft about the year 12770 In Europe, before the eighteenth century, al paper was made on laid moulds and the sheets s moulded retained the impressions of the laid an chain wires used in the construction of the moulds Any wire-worl, in the form of objects, added to th top surface of these laid and chain wires also mad impressions in the paper. Why these indentation are called watermarks is not known as the marl in paper is no more made by the use of water tha the sheet itself. In German, the design impresse in the paper is called a "wasserzeichen" which, lik the English term, watermark, is confusing. In th French languageitis called "filigrane" and in Dutch "papiermerken." These two appellations are mor suitable. Lewis in his "Life of Mayster Wyllya Caxton," (London, 1737), always refers to watermarks as "papermarks," while all contemporar German writers called them "papierzeichen." I the English patem granted to John Phipps, date 1790, the name "watermark" appeared. This nodoubt, the first use of thisterm, and asthe nam "wasserzeichen" was not used by German writer until about 1810, we are led to believe that th term, watermark (faulty in its meaning as it is) had its origin in the English language Digital image© 2004 Mariot Libary, Universty o Utah.
