Show 4 OL »PAPERMAKIN measures twelve by seventeen inches and fairl good sheets of paper have been made on it. Thi mould is, of course, a reproduction as there are n moulds from so earlya date in existence. The fram is held rigid at each corner by leather thongs an the covering, or laid lines, is composed of strips spli from the stalks of bamboo. This covering is boun to the ribs, or supports, of the mould by threads o flax. The illustration, showing different types o paper, (Figure1a)givesa portion of abamboomould also the cross section of the covering, and a specime of the paper made on this style of mould The deckle was a narrow rim that fitted ove the four edges of the moulds and its use was to determine the size of the sheetsand to keep the pul from running over the edges of the moulds. Th term deckle came from either the German "declel or old Dutch "dekfel," meaning cover. As the wor was not used in England before the day of Spilman the German, who established a paper mill in Ken in 1588, he, in all probability, introduced this term and also the word saul, into English paper mills It is likely that deckles were used on the mould of the ancient Chinese and Persians, but sheets o paper could have been made without their use o moulds of the bamboo type (In the making of modern handmade paper th wooden deckle should suit the requirements of th paper being fabricated.
