Show OL ~PAPERMAKIN 5 when on a pilgrimage, put carded wool betwee his feet and the soles of his sandals and at the en of his journey found the wool had been converte into felt. The invention of felt by St. Clement i questionable asthis material had been in use befor his time. It is stated that wool-combing was firs introduced by Bishop Blaize in 316 A. D It is not known when felt came into useasamaterial for receiving the wet sheets of paper as the were couched from the moulds, nor is it know when woven wool cloth was substituted for th matted felt for papermalking, but it is probable tha some kind of woven material was in use as earl as the thirteenth century for this purpose. Ther ‘were no special wool cloths made for papermalsin until the eighteenth century although there wasa incorporated company of felt workersin England i 1604. T hese artisans made felt for hats but itis no recorded that they made either woven wool o wool felt especially for the papermalkers In examining old paper it is not uncommon t find shreds of wool imbedded in the surface of th sheets which came from the material upon whic they had been couched; again the paper shows im pressions of woven cloth. In numerous instances uman and animal hair have been found in earl papers of both Orientaland European origin.
